Four-Card Poker and My Date With the Chumash Indians

Without question, one of the real "perks" of being a part of Las Vegas night casino entertainment team is being able to test out new casino-style games in advance of their subsequent debut onto the casino gaming scene at a later date. Our company has always been a pioneer in the Las Vegas night casino party rental industry when it comes to having these new casino games available for their clients to enjoy, before anyone else in the Southern California entertainment market. With that in mind, it should go without saying that, when a new game DOES make it's way onto the casino gaming scene, it's up to US to put it through it's paces.

You ALL know where this is going: It's "Story Time" once again. Hey, that's why we're consider the "propaganda ministry" around here. (Grin) OK, so, here's one for the books.....

It's late 2008, time for another family adventure. (I'd call it a "vacation," but, when it comes to MY family, "adventure" is a much better term. You'll see.) It's decided by my dearest wife that it's time to forget the casino party industry for one weekend, scoop up the kids, hop in the car, and head to a city in central California called Solvang, a word that i'm guessing is Danish for "bakery swap meet." OK, I think to myself, the good wife needs a getaway to have some fun, do some shopping, and find out what an Aebleskiver is. (Don't ask. The only thing I can cook is microwaveable foods.)

So, off we go: up Highway 101, past Cachuma Lake, and, lo and behold, there it is. Hold on to your Aebleskivers, I can't believe it: It's a little Dutch town right here in California. Quaint, nice, friendly people, great food (I highly recommend the Solvang Restaurant), lots of places to see and visit.

I mean, LOTS of places: Including one more that I didn't know existed..... It seems that, just up the road from "Aebleskiver Alley," there's this brand new, bright and shiny building that stands out like a sore thumb. And, when I saw the name on this non-Solvang-looking monstrosity, it immediately caught my eye. You couldn't miss it.

"Chumash Indian Casino and Spa."

We drove right by this huge casino on our way into Solvang, and when my wife saw me looking at this marvel of casino engineering, she KNEW that the Chumash Indian tribe was going to be an unplanned part of her vacation. (Told you it would end up being an adventure. It just wouldn't be right if we didn't have a lil' adventure.)

Now, when I was in school, if you were to poll every history teacher that ever tried to interest me in the fine art of historical studies, they'd all tell you that everything I know about history would fit into a small paper cup. Over the years, i've improved my historical knowledge ever so slightly, especially in the area of American history, but I have to admit that American Indian history has slipped many a shot by this goalie.

"Do me a favor," my wife immediately blurts out, as we're passing this Chumash Casino. "Don't go investigating that place until we're on our way out of town, after our vacation." It's a deal, I say. So, after all of us have had our fill of every Danish pastry this side of Solvang, it's time. Vacation over, time to check out the "Chumash Indian Casino and Spa."

Now, I may not know a whole lot about the Chumash tribe, but I DO know the law when it comes to both the casino party industry AND California casinos in general. NO KIDS. Wifey's not interested in seeing this place, anyway. The only gambling she's ever done was marrying me, and since she's lost her only "wager," she's not looking to recoup her losses. She'll stay with the kids in the comfort of the covered patio outside the entrance to this place, and tells me, "go do your thing."

So, inside I go. Yep, pretty nice place. It is new, clean, and has the game roster you'd expect would be present in a California Indian-based casino: No Roulette, no Craps (not even card craps), PLENTY of slots, and when it comes to the table games, it's pretty much the usual suspects (BJ, Caribbean, 3CP), excepting for one.

Four Card Poker.

Now, I remember receiving the memo from the Shuffle-master corporation in regards to their newest creation, but I hadn't seen this game implemented onto a casino floor. OK, let's see how this works, I say to myself. Pull up a chair, let's take this game for a spin. Well, after about 30 minutes, here's what we found out about "Four Card Poker," courtesy of yours truly --

--Two initial bets are available: The Ante and the Aces Up.

--All players get five cards each and the dealer gets six cards. (This part i'm not too thrilled about, but since there's no vigorish involved in regards to winning bets, the house has to have SOME advantage.) One of the dealer cards is placed face up, and five face down.

--Players making the Ante bet must decide to fold or raise.

--If the player folds he forfeits all bets.

--If player raises, then he must raise at least the amount of the Ante and at most, three times the Ante.

--Players then keep their best four cards and discard one.

--Following is the ranking of hands from lowest to highest: high card, pair, two pair, straight, flush, three of a kind, straight flush, four of a kind.

--After all decisions have been made the dealer will turn over his cards and select the best four out of six.

--The player's hand shall be compared to the dealer's hand, the higher hand winning.

--If the dealer's hand is higher the player shall lose the Ante and Raise.

--If the player's hand is higher or equal then the Ante and Raise shall pay one to one.

--If the player has at least a three of a kind he shall also be paid a Bonus, regardless of the value of the dealer's hand. (I love that part of the game.)

Careful mathematical evaluation of this game called "Four Card Poker" seems to suggest the house edge comes out to about 3.89% using a normal payout table (there are more than one, depending on where you might play), and can dip to about 3.15%, using what might be called "basic strategy," something discussed in Blackjack play ad nauseum. We'll break down this, and other games, in subsequent blogs, trust me.

Our review of this new game? Well, at 3.9%, it's not a game that'll eat you alive. Heck, Roulette's house edge is around 5.2%, so, as far as new casino games on the market, Four Card Poker seems to be pretty fair. We'll give Four Card Poker a B+ rating to start.

We'd give it an "A+," except for two little problems. One, I lost $60 at the Chumash Casino testing out the game. GREAT rush of cards for the dealer. Oh, and, Two? I played for about 30 minutes, which, when you're stuck with MY kids, must seem like 30 days. Wifey's grade of Four Card Poker? Let's just say that I kinda knew what it would be, when I exited the casino a half-hour after entering and an Aebleskiver went whizzing my by head.

Moral of the story? If you visit the Chumash Indian Casino and Spa, take a shot at Four Card Poker. If you're a lover of new casino card games, I think you'll like it. Oh, and disarm all family members of Danish pastry before entering the Casino. I KNOW you'll like THAT.

Who Wants Public School Rankings?

One of the most popular and controversial topics in education is the use of public school rankings. Generally speaking, parents love them and teachers hate them. Makes sense. Teachers are judged, criticized, and sometimes rewarded or punished on the basis of public school rankings. For those teachers already in challenging, inner-city environments, public schools rankings tend to offer little but added stress.

Parents, on the other hand, see public school rankings as a concrete way to judge and evaluate potential schools and current teachers. For parents moving to a new area, public school rankings are an anchor to reality; a way to make the difficult decision of where to live or not live. But the issue of public school rankings really goes deeper. I think it lies in the inherent mistrust between parents in low income areas and school systems in general.

Public School Rankings in the Inner-City

Let's face it, affluent families rarely have to worry about the schools their children attend. I know that even upper middle class families can't always afford private schools, but they tend to live in areas where the public schools excel. Affluent and educated parents help to create better schools, so they are less likely to be involved in schools affected by the dismal low public school rankings that the majority of inner city schools struggle with.

What's different in an inner city school? Of course, the majority of inner-city residents live there because they don't have the education and money to be able to choose to live somewhere else. Yes, there are exceptions, but I never met anyone who voluntarily lived in the projects when I taught at a project based inner-city school. What I did run into were a lot of parents who were uncomfortable, disdainful, and mistrusting of teachers and schools in general.

How to Raise Public School Rankings in Inner-City Schools

Some of the stereotypes of inner-city life are sadly based in reality. These kids are more likely to have parents who are in prison, use drugs, or are unable to be actively involved parents. If we really want to start raising public school rankings in the inner-city, we need to start with the parents. There are a lot of hard working, but poorly educated parents who truly want their children to succeed in school. Working two job, being financially strapped, and not having the academic background to help their children succeed are some of the most common struggles for this population of parents.

By offering parent education programs to these people in our inner-city, we can take the first important step to raising public school rankings where they are needed most. Classes on finances, reading to your child, or basic parenting classes can all have a real impact on public school rankings. Even if no one under 18 is in the room.

UCLA Law School - They Are in the Top 15 in All There Ranking Medias

The UCLA Law School is a prestigious educational institution that has been around since 1949. It is considered rather new, but is still in the upper tier of the rankings for national schools. The US News ranks this school at number 15 while the Gourman Report has it at 13, and its educational ranking is at 14. The Princeton Review gave this school their highest ranking by placing them 96 out of 100 when compared to other law schools in America.

There is a student to faculty ratio of 11.6, which has helped provide the quality of the educational experience along with the outstanding staff. For the year 2010, the 25th to 75th percentile of its students that are attending have LSAT scores of 164 to 169 while the GPA was 3.49 to 3.87. While these might be slightly lower than Yale and Harvard, they still overlap some.

This school offers the standard Juris Doctor degree along with many specialties. The specialty degrees include Business Law and Policy, Public Interest Law, Entertainment Law, Law and Philosophy, and Critical Race Studies. For those of you that desire to become a law professor, there is the Doctor of Juridical Science that is offered.

The facility at this educational institution has published over 48 books on the subject of law, 45 chapters, and over 150 legal journal articles since 2002.

Noted alumni from this school include Val Ackerman, Vincent Bugliosi, and Laurie L. Levenson. 94.9% of past graduates have obtained employment before graduating with their degree from the UCLA School.

What's The Difference Between Born and Made Salespeople?

Recently, I was in a conference with five people who constitute the movers and shakers of a company.

One of them asked me a lot of questions about selling, not because she doesn't know how to do it. In fact, she's quite effective.

Her concern is how can we teach others to do what seems to come so naturally to her?

For instance, how will trainees know when to abandon a prospect that is a long shot to turn into a customer? How will neophytes be able to sound natural, especially if they're using scripts?

My reply was simple: Don't worry; I'm not going hire natural, born salespeople.

There aren't that many of them, and we'd have to pay a ton to make the job attractive to them.

We're going to "make" salespeople; to manufacture them, from raw material, because we must, for the sake of economy and speed.

As a general principle, it is imprudent to try to clone "naturals," because many of them have very bad habits that shouldn't be imitated.

Consider Johnny Cash, the late, great country singer, and a true "natural" in his field. His atonality is legendary, but he was able to break with convention and make it work. He found an appreciative audience for his style, mistakes and all.

But it would be foolish to try to develop the next Johnny Cash.

People would probably pick up his worst habits and not even see his best.

"Made" sellers are selected because they have the capability of following a design created by others; they actually like using a mold, and being molded, while naturals abhor them, and break them at every turn.

A natural resists being guided and managed, and made sellers require it, and often are glad to accept it.

There are other differences, as well.

But natural salespeople have nothing to worry about. They'll always be in demand, if only because they're so rare!

Article Marketing - 2 Divergent Schools of Thought

Article marketing rocks... it is very effective, cost efficient and stands the test of time as your articles will provide visitors and back links long into the future.

But there is a growing number of people who use their resource boxes in completely different ways. The first and larges group do what you would imagine is the most obvious way of writing their resource box. This involves writing an article based on the keywords that they are trying to rank for in Google and this is carried on into their resources box with their links based around the key words that they are targeting.

This is a tried and trusted method but it has one flaw and it is this-the article you write may very well rank on the first page of Google and your site could be ranking at number 11, on the next page of the search engine results. This means that your article, your work on somebody else's article directory, is keeping your site off the first page of Google.

The other minority body of opinion uses a different technique. They write articles not on the niche that they are trying to get their site ranked for, but in another niche altogether. This niche would be in a popular area with a lot of webmasters looking for content for their blogs.

By writing the article on a popular heavily searched topic you are more likely to get your article published in more locations and consequently your backlinks will be greater. Now these backlinks will be pointing to your blog thus increasing it's chances of ranking well... without the fear of your own article keeping you off the first page of results. Because remember your article is written on a completely different topic from the niche which your blog is in.

These are the two different approaches that you can adopt and maybe it is worth your while to try some articles using both approaches and see what works best for you. The latter minority method will give you a great number of backlinks but not so many click throughs and traffic as the topic of your article will be different from your resource box link.

The other more conventional method will give you backlinks (less of them) and traffic but depending on your niche you may find that the traffic numbers are small if the niche is a small niche which does not generate a huge amount of traffic such as weight loss or debt or making money online.

The Law Schools of Famous Lawyers

Choosing a Law School can be a difficult decision. Besides the obvious things such as ranking, expense, location and reputation many potential law students are interested to know what famous attorneys came from the schools they are thinking of attending. Yet, unless someone does independent research on numerous institutions or wants to research the backgrounds of a particular attorney they are a fan of there is no real good resource that provides such information. To remedy this, I thought I'd pick out a handful of my favorite attorneys and list where they got their Juris Doctors from.

My personal favorite attorney has to be former California Prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi of 'The Manson Murders' fame. Mr. Bugliosi was able to convict Charles Manson despite the fact that Manson never was actually at the crime scene and committed his crime by brainwashing and planning the Tate/La Bianca murders from afar. He has since gone on to be an internationally acclaimed writer beginning with the legendary 'Helter Skelter' and including the more recent 'Outrage' and 'The prosecution of George W. Bush For Murder'. Vincent Bugliosi attended UCLA Law School and graduated in 1964.

Next up is the famous 'country' lawyer and tv commentator, Gerry Spence. Mr. Spence is well known as a commentator during the OJ Simpson trials and has the distinction of having never lost a case in 40 years. He attended the University of Wyoming Law School gaining his degree in 1952. He is known for pioneering the 'Matlock' style of 'narrative' lawyering. He uses stories, allegories, metaphors and carefully crafted emotional hooks to convince a jury of his convictions.

No list would be complete without Professor Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law School. Besides his role in the OJ trial, Mr. Dershowitz has obtained a reputation as a great civil liberties lawyer. He graduated first in his class at Yale Law School and was Editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal. He has one of the most prestigious client lists of any attorney including such notables as Michael Milken, Leona Helmsley, Mike Tyson, Penthouse, Patricia Hearst, John Landis and even fellow attorneys F. Lee Bailey(Boston University Law School 1960) and William Kunstler(Columbia Law School).

Speaking of the OJ Simpson trial, Johnnie Cochran attended Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles as did the fiery tv and radio commentator Gloria Allred. Barry Scheck of the 'Innocence Project' at Cardozo Law School got his degree at UC Berkeley School of Law. Robert Shapiro, OJ's lawyer through much of the early stages of the trial attended UCLA Law School. On the other side of the court, Marcia Clark attended Southwestern University School of Law and Christopher Darden attended the University of California, Hastings College of The Law. Last, on the other side of the bench, judge Lance Ito obtained his law degree from UC Berkeley (1975).

Finally, I thought I'd throw in some of my own personal favorites mostly based on their accomplishments and personality. I'm a big fan of the radio host Larry Elder and Larry got his JD from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1977. His sometime rival on KABC radio is civil rights attorney Leo Terrel who attended UCLA School of Law. Since Larry's been off the air I've become a fan of Mark Levin who got his JD from Temple University. Mark has achieved tremendous success over the past two years and most recently authored his best selling book 'Liberty and Tyranny'.

One of the most important factors in making your website relevant is ensuring that they keywords are in the title tag. Make sure that the keywords are towards the beginning of the title tag, and try and mix in some common words towards the end. Make sure that each of your web pages include no more than two keyword or key phrases. Taking these steps will enable your website to perform better in the search engines.

Choosing a niche for your business opportunities will help your website stand out, and limit the competition. Find one with plenty of potential customers and little competition, and you have a very good chance of watching your business grow.

Why Family Business Owners Need a Job Description

Do you know what one of the most important tools family business owners need to ensure their business is well run? You might think of a board of directors a strong management team or a family employment policy. While these are all good answers, the tool I would like you to consider is an owner job description.

My guess is that many readers are skeptical at this suggestion. This is not the advice you typically hear. Yet in my experience, a sophisticated appreciation of what ownership is (and is not) is such a critical dimension for long-term success in family enterprise that I want to convince you that creating an owner job description should be at the top of your to-do list.

If I were trying to encourage you that having a job description for the CEO or other key positions in your business is important, my task would not be so complicated. The value of job descriptions in a business is widely understood. Job descriptions clarify the hierarchy of authority, establish accountability, ensure key tasks get accomplished and provide a mechanism for evaluating performance.

Imagine that you have created a new position for a vice president of marketing in your business. How could you possibly fill that position without a job description? Potential applicants need to understand what will be expected of them in the job, to whom they will report and how you will evaluate their success in the job. You would also use the job description to determine what skills and experience will be needed to fill the role. And other managers on the team need the job description to understand how this new team-member's responsibilities will integrate with what they do.

Since convincing you that a job description in your business is probably an easy sell, let's take an example that may not be as familiar. What if I told you that you have a job description as a homeowner, even though it is unlikely you have put it down in writing? As a homeowner, I would suggest you need to do the following:

• Ensure that your mortgage and property taxes are paid
• Invest in the maintenance of your property to ensure that it is a safe environment for your family
• Protect your property rights (e.g., do not let others infringe on the property)
• Be informed on issues that affect your community (e.g., changes in laws, new building codes, etc.)
• Create a will that determines who will own your property if you pass away
• Maintain records to protect your ownership (title, tax records, etc.)

While you may not think of this list as a job description, these are clearly actions a responsible owner should take to protect his or her investment.

So, what is the job of a business owner? Let's take a look at the job descriptions we have already considered. In the case of a management job description, the purpose is to clarify lines of authority and ensure that key tasks are accomplished, among other things. In the case of an owner's job description, these criteria apply as well. An owner job description outlines who is accountable for key responsibilities in the oversight of the family business. Are owners responsible for day-to-day operations of the business? No. But, they are responsible for setting the vision and direction for the business. With respect to lines of authority, owners are responsible for electing directors, who in turn, are responsible for overseeing management.

Similarly, there are parallels between the homeowner job description and the business owner job description. The focus of a homeowner's job is to ensure his investment is protected. A business owner has a similar motivation to protect his or her investment. So, what are some of the actions you should take as a business owner to protect your investment? First, management is best able to do its job if owners provide clear direction about their desires for the future, as well as their financial expectations of the business.

In setting an ownership vision, questions that need to be answered include:

• How long do we want to own this business?
• What role do we want family to play in management of the business?
• What are the rules for who can own stock in the business and how ownership will transition from current to future owners?
• How much risk are we willing to take on?
• Do we aspire to diversify into different business lines?
• Do we expect to take money out of the business every year?

Beyond these vision questions, owners should also provide guidance on the values they would like the business to embody. Is creativity or entrepreneurialism important? Do we expect management to make a strong commitment to employees? Do we expect the organization to be involved in the local community?

In order to protect your investment, you must also ensure that you have the appropriate governance structure in place to oversee management. Owners must decide how the board of directors will be structured. What role will owners play on the board? What role will management play? Will you incorporate independent directors in the mix? How often will the board meet and what authority will it be given? And, owners have the responsibility for selecting the directors, typically on an annual basis.

Finally, in order to make all of the decisions described above, owners need to be well-educated. They need to understand their industry, the competitive environment and be able to read and evaluate financial statements. They also need to understand the unique aspects of businesses with a family ownership structure.

In summary, if you were to write a job description for yourself as an owner, it would be fairly short:

• Define the vision for the business
• Clarify financial expectation to management
• Articulate values that should be embodied in the business
• Develop a strong governance structure to oversee management performance
• Elect qualified board members
• Understand the business context we operate in

While the list may be fairly short, each of these responsibilities is incredibly important.

Protecting your investment in a home or other assets is something you do without thinking. Shouldn't you place the same importance on protecting what is likely a much larger investment-your investment in the family business? I hope you will take these suggestions to heart and craft a simple owner's job description for the owners in your business.

There are six great law schools in the State of Michigan. These include the Ave Maria School of Law in Ann Arbor, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit, the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, the Michigan State University College of Law in East Lansing, the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law in Lansing, and Wayne State University Law School in Detroit.

Of course, not all Michigan law schools are alike, and in choosing a Michigan law school - as you would with any school - you should make sure that you are making the correct choice for YOU. Unfortunately, far to many prospective law students fall into the trap of letting magazines and artificial law school rankings make the choice for them. If you were to do that, you might focus on the University of Michigan Law School, which admittedly enjoys an outstanding national reputation, to the exclusion of several other excellent law schools in Michigan or elsewhere.

One of the things I try and emphasize to students trying to select a law school is that you get a very similar education no matter where you go. The "elite" schools will never admit that, but its true. Moreover, having been a practicing lawyer now for almost 10 years, I assure you that where you went to law school will very quickly become virtually meaningless to your employers and colleagues. I've known great lawyers and terrible lawyers who went to great schools - and I've known great lawyers and terrible lawyers who went to no-name night schools.

Therefore, if you've decided you want to go to law school in Michigan, you should carefully analyze which of the excellent choices will be the best law school for you. If your aim to get a high-paying job in Manhattan immediately after graduation, the University of Michigan Law School is probably a place you should target. On the other hand, if you're looking to set up a local practice on of the smaller local schools may be your best choice.

Although the substance of what you will learn is largely the same at every school, the environment is definitely not. That's why, if you've decided you want to go to a Michigan Law School, you should visit every school you're considering to get a feel for the campus and physical surroundings. You should also speak with some students to see what they have to say about the atmosphere. Some law schools are definitely more friendly that others.

No two Michigan law schools are created alike, just as no two law students are created alike. Finding a good match should be your top priority. You're going to spend three years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars - regardless of which Michigan law school you select - and you should do everything possible to make sure its not a miserable investment.

When I was choosing which law school to attend I spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars researching and in many cases visiting the eleven schools that made my final list. In the end, I didn't choose the highest ranked or most prestigious school I got into, but I did choose the best law school for me. And I made the right choice.

Nursing Schools - Closing the Gap on Applicant Shortages

For the ninth consecutive year, 2009 seen nursing schools increasing its enrollments, according to the American Association of College Nursing (AACN). The boost was 3.9 percent over the previous year and nearly 40,000 qualified applicants were turned away due to resource and faculty limitations, which has been the growing trend in the past several years. Another report, from the National League of Nursing put the number of qualified applicants turned away in 2008 at almost 99,000 and for the same reason: not enough teachers, classrooms or what a nursing student would need to be successful.

The AACN's first round figures from the yearly nursing school assessment for 2009 showed that enrollment in master's programs for nursing climbed by 9.6 percent and in doctoral programs the numbers jumped by 20.5 percent.

The American Organization of Nurse Executives (ALONE)'s president, Donna Herrin-Griffith stated that the report of increased enrollment was welcome news. "As health care reform efforts continue and pressures to expand primary, preventative and transitional care increase, it is critical that talented individuals who want to pursue nursing in both entry and advanced practice levels have the opportunity to access a quality education," she said.

But for all the nursing school increases, there is a shortage of nursing staff in the 'real-world.' A shortage of nurses will cripple this country if not addressed in the near future. According to a spokesman at Vanderbilt University, the shortfall of registered nurses will reach a staggering 260,000 by 2025, this as baby boomers become more fragile with age and require more and more care with every passing year.

Hoping to address the precise challenges that nursing instruction poses, several groups are combining forces with 30 state teams in order to redesign the system which would allow new graduates to come into the labor force with the skills they need to serve patients in long-term facilities in addition to clinics and hospitals.

Joining the 30 state teams from across America is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Center to Champion Nursing in America. What they want to accomplish is to help colleges and universities be able to graduate tens of thousands of nurses each year. Currently the problems are a deficient in the tactical joint venture between university and college programs; and inadequate medical sites that would supply the practical know-how necessary for proficiency progress.

The goal of the CCNA is to share original advancements to building training competence in the nursing schools as well as ensure the best applications from around the nation are integrated into clinical nursing education.

Although it is not solely the responsibility of the nursing educator to combat the nursing shortage or build a reliable 21st century nursing staff; it is within the educational system to help encourage a greater number of students to enter the workforce fully prepared with the skills they need to thrive in the ever changing landscape of healthcare.

We are now into Term 4 of 2009. This means all year 11 have just moved onto year 12, and are in their first Term of their HSC. Now is the real thing - all school assessments count towards your internal rank. Your assignments and exams at school will affect your ATAR - and your final HSC exams are less than a year away.

It is time to get yourself into the right mindset in order to achieve the ATAR you want.

How to set goals

Goal setting is an effective motivational tool that can help you stay focused and on-track to your HSC success. Staying focused and motivated throughout the 2 years starting at the beginning of year 11 plays a large part to your eventual success in getting the ATAR you need for your ideal University course. Staying focused and motivated is also the biggest challenge students face. Here's where effective goal-setting can help.

There are many books written on this subject, but the key thing to learn is the ability to break big goals down into small actionable tasks. For example, suppose your ultimate HSC goal is to achieve the ATAR you need for your dream University course. This is a very common goal, one shared by all keen HSC students dedicated to their studies.

Breaking big goals into smaller goals

So how would you go about breaking down this goal into smaller actionable tasks?

First, make a commitment to end the habit of procrastination. Accept that for great things to happen, there must be a proportionately great amount of work that needs to be done - by you. Think of this as a 'law of conservation of effort and rewards', or the old adage: 'you reap what you sow'. In order to achieve a high ATAR, you need to study - there's no two ways about this. Do all your homework from school (and tutoring!), and ask questions until you completely understand every concept before moving on.

Now, since it's a given that hard work and study is required, you'll need to work out what you can do each day to work to your goal. The second step is to find out what is a sustainable amount of study you can do each day. Make a commitment to stick to this amount, everyday, for as long as you can. Work out a schedule in which to split your study time amongst your subjects. Put more time into your weaker subjects - generally this approach will maximise your aggregate mark (due to diminishing returns from excelling in each individual subject). Make a schedule, commit to it and STICK to it.

The third and final step is to START TODAY. Remember that there is no longer any reason for you to procrastinate as you've accepted the fact that hard work is necessary for great rewards.

Keep small goals realistic The thing to remember about setting smaller goals is to keep them realistic and achievable. For example, suppose your goal is to do well in an upcoming Mathematics exam, and you need to master Integration and Polynomials before the exam. Then what you can do is break the content and exercises you'll need to go through into daily portions and do those portions each day. Keep the amount achievable, but don't be lazy about it. Do the most you can - then have a break.

Rewarding yourself Rewarding yourself is an important part of the whole process. It is wrong to believe that HSC success comes from complete sacrifice of one's social life and leisure time for the entire 2 years.

While it is important to set goals, it is equally important to reinforce the achievement of goals with proportionate rewards. Decide to yourself prior to starting each goal what the reward for the goal is. For example, you may have a goal of achieving 90% in the next Physics exam. You may think this is particularly challenging for you, since Physics is one of your weaker subjects. Therefore you may decide that if you achieve this goal, you'd get to go out for a day or two, or throw a party, or buy yourself something nice. However it is also important that your activity is something that involves movement. Because study requires you to be at home / school / library, it is not a good idea to spend your breaks doing something at home, such as playing computer games for the whole day.

Study smart, study hard Have you heard some people telling you to "study smarter, not harder"? This is one of the most dangerous things to believe in, as it gets students into the wrong mindset. Yes, there are ways to study smarter, as it comes from understanding the way the HSC works, how HSC scaling works, what percentile is required for a certain aggregate mark, etc. As well, there are definitely great benefits in learning effective study habits such as how to set schedules, set goals (what this article is teaching!), and how to maximise the use of your resources (teachers, books etc). However, this does NOT mean you should not work as hard as you can. Instead, every time you hear someone say to you "study smarter, not harder", you should reply "why not do both?".

"Study smart AND study hard" - that's the way to get a 99.95.

Things you can do to study smarter:

Educate yourself of the way the HSC works, such as HSC scaling, how the ATAR is calculated, what marks are required for your required ATAR, etc
Make maximum use of your teachers at school and tutoring
Make use of quality textbooks for your subjects. Sometimes, notes from past students / friends etc, even teachers at school, are no-where near as comprehensive as the textbook
Study with friends who are as dedicated as you are

Things you can do to study harder:

Stop procrastinating - start today!
Make a schedule, stick to it
Set small realistic goals that are part of your bigger goals

Final thoughts

The key to HSC success is not how 'naturally bright' you are. It is not what school you go to either (although having great teachers helps a lot, you can always find great teachers from tutoring). The most important thing is consistency in hard work.

If you are still in high school, you don't need to worry too much about your grades, as long as they will get you into college. If you are already in college, you need to be working hard to get and maintain a B+ average.

While in high school, you should start planning which college you will attend and what you will major in. Contrary to common belief, you do not need to have taken pre-med to get into med school. While your grades won't matter to the med school, the college you choose to attend may come into play. Most med schools will accept work done at a community college, but the classes must transfer over to the university you choose. It is best if you can get into a university from the beginning.

Once you are in college, you will want to major in something that truly interests you. It is better to major in Business and get good grades than to major in science and do poorly. No matter what your major, to get into medical school you will need to take Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, English, and most likely Physics and Calculus. You will also need to take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), usually in your junior year.

Medical schools will look at your overall GPA, your science GPA, the score on the MCAT, extracurricular activities, and your application essays. To get into med school, they like to see at least a 3.6 GPA. If you have a high science GPA, but your overall GPA is a bit lower than what they are looking for, you may still get in if your MCAT is over 30. If you find your GPA is a bit low, take extra courses, or even go ahead and get your Master's degree.

Medical school is very competitive, there are not nearly as many spots as there are applicants. If it is truly your heart's desire to become a doctor, you can always consider studying abroad. The important thing is to not give up. You may have to take a longer route to get your dream, but with hard work and perseverance you can accomplish almost anything!

Where Do Starving Writers Go to Earn?

Okay, so where exactly do starving writers go to earn? Well, not too long ago, I decided to Google the terms "starving writer" and "money", hoping there would be a site out there that would finally match me (Starving Writer) with my Ticket To Eating (Money).

Turns out I wasn't too successful. Sure, I got a lot of "how-to" advice articles, some of them pitching me and about a million other fellow nutritionally-deprived searchers the promise that we could all be millionnaires as writers in the space of two days - as long as we all came with a beating pulse (couldn't hurt), a working brain (purely optional), and only two monthly credit card payments of just $39.99 (highly recommended).

What I was looking for, though, was the Holy Grail Site for Starving Writers - the one site that would proclaim,"We don't just tell you how, we set you up to do! Right now! Make money from your writing! Right on this site!"

Sure, there were the usual suspect Writers Contests for short story submissions, most of which promise you a $30 gift certificate and a five-minute "exclusive" one-on-one sit-down consultation with a Faceless Literary Editor From Some Publication You've Never Heard Of, advising you on the crucial steps you need to take in order to someday, maybe, with really hard work, become a Faceless Literary Editor From Some Publication Nobody Else Has Ever Heard Of. Needless to say, forty-five minutes into filling out the obscenely detailed Contest Application, I was suddenly stricken with heart palpitations,. seizures, and a sudden urge to stick my head in the microwave.

All of which brings me back full circle to the question: Where do starving writers go to earn? Well, here's my answer in two parts: If you want to starve, then keep writing. If you want to earn money, then it's time to apply to law school.

Martial Artist Says Hand Weapons Should Be Few, Simple & Effective

Watch most of the martial arts movies coming from Hong Kong, and you'll see some unusual hand weapons being deployed.

Some look like striking snakes; others like pecking hens.

Which hand weapons are best?

In my view, we should learn a variety of hand variations, but stick to deploying a just a few simple and solid ones in our training and in combat.

Here are my four favorites:

(1) Closed Fist. There is a reason that many punches employ a closed fist. It is solid, hard, resistant to injury, and it penetrates upon contact with the opponent. The knuckles are the primary striking surface, moving frontally or side to side, but the soft surface, next to the baby finger, can be used as well in a hammering motion.

(2) Tiger's Claw. This is a five-finger deployment, utilizing curled and rigid digits, useful in facial and eye attacks.

(3) Braced Thumb. Make a fist, bring your thumb up beyond and flush with your index finger, and you have an excellent weapon for soft targets, such as eyes, or the temple area.

(4) Eagle's Talon or Crab. This is a three-digit deployment, using the index and middle fingers and the thumb, in opposition to each other. Squeezing these together in an attack on the neck and Adam's apple is efficient because it creates a quick grab and requires very little space for landing in the right spot.

I'm not a big fan of the "shuto," known commonly as a "karate chop." I think it's too easy to damage yourself when using it, especially if you accidentally strike a hard surface of the opponent's body.

For the same reason, I'm reluctant to launch solitary finger strikes. It's way too easy to break an unsupported finger, causing pain and distraction in a critical situation.

In this issue, I want to concentrate on what the purpose of life should be since this is the only foundation for successful living on earth. No man can be successful in any venture without having a clear cut goal and purpose in that area of endeavor, it is the clear purpose that points to you how far you have gone. Life is not complete and you cannot be fulfilled without having a definite purpose you have to pursue.

Let us start this study by casting our minds back to the first few generations of human beings on planet earth. You may not know how they were, but your imagination can help you to understand the point I am proving here. Those who lived in the first few generations had more problems and challenges than those in this generation, considering the fact that they do not have any of the conveniences we freely have these days.

Can you imagine a generation where there were no cutlasses, hoes, knives, plates to serve ditches. Earlier generations did not even have the opportunity of using fire, clothes, modern medicine, there were no schools, hospitals, law courts, stadium, roads, motor vehicles, electricity, rail roads, trains or trams, not to even mention airplanes. A society where is is no modern means of communication like cell phones, fax, tele-conference, internet facilities and so on. You can continue to think and mention so many things that generation of human being have invented and developed in the past few years. One hundred years ago, many impossible things are now toys that little children can operate with ease.

Generations of human being have come and gone and each generation is leaving the world better that they met it. We know that there are a few people here and there who came to destroy and spoil things that other good people are doing or building. The intention of this write-up is to gear you up; to engineer you; to challenge you to be among those human being who will contribute something of note that will make the coming generation of human beings better and happier than those of this generation. It is in view of this assertion that I want to write seven points which I believe should be the purpose of everybody who want to be successful and leave footmarks on the sand of time. These seven purposes of life are reasonable and full of wisdom and if followed, you can not fail now and in the world to come.

The first purpose is for you to know your God. The Bible says, "...The people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploit". This knowledge of God is very crucial to everything that you do on planet earth, for it will determine your destiny here on earth and your destiny when you depart from this world. In part one of this series, I explained this fact much more elaborately, you can try to look for the part one and read it again for a better understanding.

The second purpose you must understand is that God intends that all life should reproduce after its kind. This mean that dogs will continue to increase and multiply in the dog life and no cross breeding of different life. God is not happy for a man or woman to sleep with dog or horse, it stinks in the nostrils of God. It is God's joy for you to increase and multiply not only biologically but also physically, materially, and spiritually.

The third purpose of life is for relationship. We need to relate with our God and with our fellow human beings. This is the place for kindness and friendship, you need to know that you are created to be kind to other people. God is concerned about how you treat other people; the way you relate with them, those higher in rank and/or status, those below you and those of the same level. Part of this involves helping people to become better and not bitter, sometimes the only thing another person need from you is smiles, sometimes it is an ordinary word 'thank you', sometimes it is just a visit of solidarity. God who said, "It is not good for man to be alone" means business and knows that no man can ever be fulfilled alone; we need other people to make useful contributions to our lives and we need to do the same for others.

The fourth purpose of life is for you to be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it and have dominion over all your world. These are the five fold blessings God gave to you and me to fulfill and it becomes our responsibility to make these good in our lives. This is the reason I do not support abortion in any way. Nobody knows the exact time a child is formed in the womb, sometimes you think you have it, and then its not there, and sometimes its there, you even continue to experience your monthly period and yet you are two or three months pregnant. God Himself is involved in that conception, why don't you give that baby a chance to live; you may be on your way to aborting the next president of your nation. God intends that we increase biologically and financially, He wants you to succeed.

The fifth purpose is for you to be good both in character and the works of your hand. By this I mean God wants you to be good to yourself. Whereas in the third purpose, God wants you to be good to others, in the fifth, He wants you to be good to yourself by behaving well, living a holy life.

The sixth purpose of God's intention for your life is to discover your own assignment and do it with all your heart and mind. Have you considered the fact that God finished the creation of the world with many potentials for the sons of men to develop His creation. He did not create the roads, the computers, the rail roads, the trains and so on. We have a much developed world today because different people have come at different times to discover their purpose and do it for the betterment of our world. The question now is this, What is your own contribution to the world? You can only have a meaningful contribution to this world when you discover that 'thing' God brought you here to accomplish: otherwise, it will end up being a wasted life which I pray will never happen to you.

The seventh purpose of God for your life here on earth is for you to glorify Him in all you do. The Bible says, "God inhabit the praises of HIS people".

In this article we're going to discuss what every student should do in his last year of college so that things don't pile up on you and you're ahead of the game.

It's the first semester of your last year. You look at the calendar and think you've got plenty of time to prepare for what comes next. It couldn't be further from the truth and here's why.

In your last year of college this is where you're doing your final research project for your major. Depending on what that major is, it can be a real whopper. For example, if you're a marketing major, your assignment may be to research a company from the ground up and report on how it became successful. You may also be asked to design a fictional company and market it from square one. Whatever the assignment you can be assured that it will be very time consuming. You won't have as much free time to prepare for life after college as you think. Therefore it is a good idea to start on several things as early as possible so that they don't pile up on you.

The first thing is deciding what comes after college. You basically have two choices here. You can either continue your education by going for a masters degree or you can decide that a BA is good enough and go out looking for a job.

In the case of the former you don't want to start applying for colleges at the end of your last semester or you may find that your advanced education career isn't going to start when you'd like. Most colleges have deadlines for applications and they're long before your last semester is over. So start applying for colleges early. If the college you're attending has its own masters program and you plan to register, make sure you do this early. Even though you may be a current student your college also has deadlines. You don't want to miss them.

In the case of the latter where you've decided that you've had enough of school and want to get a job, you still want to get a jump on this. For starters, employers look favorably on students who start sending in applications early. This shows the prospective employer that the student is serious about his future, and many times a student will get a job just because he applied to the company early.

Also, you want to make sure that you make a list of companies you want to apply to. Finding a job can be a long process and sometimes you can go on fifty interviews before you find something. You're going to need all the time you can get to not only get applications for these companies but also to do the research on them. You don't want to go into an interview cold. You want to be able to tell the H.R. person something about the company so they can see you did your homework. This can sometimes mean the difference between getting a job or not.

Finally, you want to start on your résumé right away. Printers take a long time to get these together. Plus, there is lots of proofreading that needs to be done. You don't want to save this for the last minute.

7 Steps to a New Life Overseas

Research shows that at any one time more than half of us are dreaming of a new life overseas, but few actually succeed in making the transition from fantasy to reality.

To completely turn everything on its head and start your life all over again in a foreign country is an incredible undertaking and one that many dream of but most ultimately shy away from.

If you would like to make your dream a reality this article will help you find the courage and strength you need to: -

- Define your new life

- Find your motivation for making your new life a reality

- Overcome any fears or uncertainty

- Practically work to find your ideal destination

- And avoid some of the more common pitfalls

What is it about your current life that you would like to change?

This will be the most important step on your road to getting a new life - finding out whether you really do want a new life or whether you simply need to make adjustments to your current life - it's all about finding your motivation!

Take a look at the following areas of your life. Write down honestly and exactly why you are dissatisfied or disillusioned with them, or how you would like to change them. Then write down if and how moving abroad will bring you closer to satisfaction in these areas.

Hopefully there are areas of your life that you are perfectly happy with, if that's the case, make a note of how these areas of your life will be affected if you move overseas - either positively or negatively.

a) Your work/job/career.

b) Your living environment/your home/your home town.

c) Your personal/family life.

The point of this exercise is getting a reality check and ultimately defining your motivation for seeking a new life.

You can keep coming back to what's important to keep and what's important to change as you progress with your planning. This will make sure you stay on track and aren't running away from something negative only for it to follow you, and you aren't leaving behind something important.

Once you have your motivation defined this will guide the rest of your journey.

Step Two - Stop thinking "what have I got to lose" - instead, start asking yourself "what have I got to gain?"

Time to be utterly selfish - and time for another list!

You and your important people - i.e., anyone else you want to move overseas with (partner, children) - need to sit down and make a 'life wish list.'

What is it you want out of life...?

Write down everything, no matter how trivial or how incredible...
Now compare lists!

Find common ground, find compromise and ultimately see how the dreams you've all now defined will be reconciled with the reality of a new life abroad.

Again, as you progress with your planning you can keep these dreams in mind and make sure you're progressing in the right direction to achieve them.

Step Three - Honesty and self knowledge.

You and your family now need to be honest with yourselves about the type of people you are.

Are new beginnings a thrill and challenge for you or does the thought truly scare you?

If you go into a blind panic at the thought, are you certain that you want to uproot yourself and go through the stress that does go with any new start?

Yes, the rewards are there but you do have to battle through some stresses to get there.

If you know that as a family unit you will survive, or you're considering making the move alone and you know that you're strong enough to keep going through the unknown to establish a life for yourself, then all you now need to do is go back to your motivation for choosing a new life abroad and hold on to that...it will get you through.

Step Four - Choosing the right country.

You may already have a country in mind; somewhere you've holidayed and fallen in love with, somewhere you already have family or friends or somewhere you've seen on the TV or in movies and where you dream of making a new life...

Some people do have very definite plans about where in the world they'd like to be this time next year, but it seems that just as many people are a little overwhelmed at the choice and have yet to make a final destination decision.

So, how do you decide?

Well, everyone has different desires but as a general guide, the following are some of the main areas you should consider and research before you make your ultimate choice. They'll help your head keep your heart in check when you visit and fall in love with a property or pace of life!

Step Five - Visit the countries you've short listed as dream destinations.

This may sound so obvious to many people, but unfortunately in my time as an expatriate in 5 very different countries I've met many people who have made the move based on house prices or photographs alone and seriously regret their decision.

You have to get a feel for a country before you make a commitment to it.

First impressions do count but they are not the be all and end all - when you spend longer in a place you begin to see both the cracks and the hidden treasures.

Step Six - Remember that you can't run away from your problems or who you are.

Problems, issues, debts and emotional baggage will follow you around the world!

You'll still react to upsets the same way whether you're at home or abroad.

Self knowledge is the key to success in life. Problems always crop up, but if you can learn to live or deal with them before you go, you are far more likely to survive life abroad.

Step Seven - Ready, steadily, go!

If you've done your homework, covered all the considerations and suggestions I've made, and researched all your options you will have found your motivation, found the inner stoicism to see this through, and you will ultimately have your new life mapped out in your mind.

You are now ready to make the whole thing happen!

It's time to move steadily through the practicalities of sorting out your old life and preparing your new life.

And if you spend time dealing with the necessary organisation and arrangements, the time to go will come around so quickly, you'll soon find you're living your new life abroad and never looking back.

Choosing the Right University Course

Choosing the right university course for yourself is very important as it will most likely determine what you will be doing for your working life. We've had past students who graduate and go onto doing:

Commerce
Law
Engineering
Medicine
Science
Arts
or combined degrees (combinations) of the above.

We will talk briefly about what career paths each degree tends to lead to, and our recommendations for each degree.

What course should I choose?

Unlike choosing HSC subjects, there is no scaling implications or anything to do with special 'rules'. University is purely about yourself - choose the course or courses that interest you. For example, if in the HSC, you did very well for economics and tend to enjoy the subject, choose Commerce or Economics at university. If you really enjoyed chemistry or biology, aim for medicine, medical science, pharmacy, optometry, physiotherapy or veterinary science. There are many possibilities, each with different goals in mind.

We don't have any specific recommendation of which degree you choose, except that you should definitely choose the course you're genuinely interested in. Whether you want to earn a high salary or contribute to your field, you will do well if you choose something you're good at. There's no point in choosing Commerce/Law or other highly demanded courses, just because your UAI was 99+ but you have no interest in commerce and/or law. Students who do this tend to regret their choices after a year or two, whereas students who choose degrees based on their interests are generally more fulfilled and do better in their degree and future career. There's no substitute for the motivation and natural aptitude you will get from doing something you like, and no matter what you do, if you do it well, you will get what you want (whether it's a high salary, recognition, contribution to your field etc).

Some common degrees

Commerce
Commerce is one of the most common courses students choose. It is a good choice, and possibly has the greatest number of career options. The most common commerce majors at the reputable universities are: accounting, finance, actuary studies (UNSW) and marketing. There are also other, less common majors.

Commerce is the degree to choose if you want to be an accountant, or get into finance (work in a bank) or marketing (work in advertising). The pay for these types of jobs are great and there's an endless variety of jobs to suit all tastes and interests.

Generally speaking, UNSW has the most reputable business school in NSW, so if you're aiming to get into this course, we recommend UNSW as one of the better universities that offer this degree. USYD, Macquarie Uni and UTS are also universities that offer reputable commerce courses.

UAIs required for commerce range from 94-96 for UNSW and USYD, and lower for the other universities. As with all references to required UAIs, check the UAC published UAI cutoffs each year at the UAC website, as they vary a little year to year depending on demand and supply.

Actuarial studies
Actuarial Studies is ideal for those who are good at maths and want to apply this to university study and their future career. Actuaries are people who work at big insurance companies, who use complex mathematical methods to calculate insurance premiums.

A common misconception people have of this course is that they will become actuaries at the end of their degree. This is most often untrue, as actuarial jobs are in low supply, and most graduates end up working in finance, in the field of financial engineering designing new financial products etc. This can be quite a lucrative field, especially if part of a quantitative team in an investment bank.

For actuary, traditionally Macquarie University's actuarial degree is the most highly regarded. However UNSW's actuarial degree is also quite popular, and UNSW being a generally more reputable university (especially internationally), we recommend doing actuary as part of the commerce degree at UNSW.

The UAI required for this is 95+ for UNSW's commerce degree, or slightly higher for Macquarie University's degree.

Law Law leads onto very lucrative careers. Law graduates tend to make the most money out of all degrees in the long run (yes, even medicine makes less!) Students who want to make lots of money in their future careers are advised to aim for Law, even if they won't want to eventually be a lawyer. The reason is because employers of large commercial companies (banks, investment banks, investment firms, accounting firms, trading companies etc) tend to seek out the Law graduates to fill their higher paying graduate positions. Law graduates tend to be high quality, intelligent, social, well-spoken and dynamic people, and employers know this.

Although the skills you pick up in law are largely irrelevant (unless you be a lawyer), employers tend to use the fact that you did law to know that you are smart enough to do law. It's like going to the fruit market and picking apples from the premium bin, because you know that all apples you pick will be high quality apples. For this same reason, sometimes people who do medicine end up being hired by investment banks and management consulting firms (very high-paying jobs), simply because those employers know all students who do law or medicine tend to be very smart and capable.

Therefore we recommend if you get a 99+ UAI and want to do commerce, you may as well combine it with law. It will be a great step forward for your future career.

Law at USYD and UNSW are the same in terms of reputation (they are the best), followed by law at UTS, then Macquarie, then elsewhere. To get into law at UNSW and USYD, you will need to get a UAI in the mid 99s. For UTS law, it is around 97.

Medicine
If you have an especially keen interest in biology, chemistry, and helping others, this is a course you can consider doing. However, we recommend against choosing medicine for the money. We will discuss this point a bit later.

Long ago, medicine entry used to be solely on the basis of UAI. However it has been pushed up so high that the universities have agreed to use the UMAT exam and interviews as additional selection criteria. Officially, the minimum UAI for medicine at reputable universities is 95, however the median entry for medicine at reputable universities has traditionally been in the low 99s. This is in additional to the UMAT and interview criteria, so medicine can be said to be the most competitive course to get into.

However, as mentioned, we recommend against medicine as an optimum choice if you want to make large sums of money in your career. The simple fact is that you will not be making large amounts of money until you are in your 30s, and in present value terms (remember your consumer arithmetic in year 10?) it's just not worth the trouble. For the same UAI (and given that you are bright enough to achieve 99+) you are better off investing your strong skills into a law degree (see above). Jobs in law firms, investment banks and other jobs in high finance can potentially pay multiples of what a senior doctor can make.

Take this advice with a grain of salt, however, because as we said at the beginning of this page, you will only get what you want if you're interested in what you're doing. Therefore, if you enjoy medicine, do it. It is a very fulfilling and the pay is very high in all respects.

Reputable universities that offer medicine include: UNSW, USYD (arguably the best), Monash and Melbourne University. University of Western Sydney recently started a medicine faculty of their own, so if you are dead-set on doing medicine but did not achieve a sufficiently high UAI, that is a consideration. Remember, transferring between similar courses once you enter university is easy (we will discuss this a bit later on).

Other health courses
As we said before, medicine is highly sought after and easily the most competitive university degree to get into. There are alternatives. At reputable universities, Optometry and Vet Science needs about a UAI of 98, Pharmacy needs about 95, Medical science needs about 93, and physiotherapy is much lower and very accessible.

If you want to get into medicine but didn't get the required UAI or UMAT scores, you can get into one of these health courses and transfer via undergraduate or graduate streams, depending on individual universities' rules.

Engineering
Engineering is a more career-oriented degree for quantitatively inclined people. There are many fields of engineering (mining, materials, petroleum etc) and in Australia, mining tends to produce the highest paying and most abundant jobs. Choose this course if you are interested in Physics, Chemistry and / or Mathematics (particular mechanics).

Another particularly popular choice is Aeronautical engineering at USYD. The misconception here is that graduates tend to work for airline companies designing planes and plane parts (called high-speed aerodynamics). This is the obvious career path, but aeronautical engineering also lets you work for car companies, designing aerodynamic external parts for cars (called low-speed aerodynamics).

The UAI required for this course has a very large range. Some of the higher UAI courses are: Aeronautical Engineering at USYD, which is about 92, and Aerospace at USYD, at 99+.

Mathematics
If you have a keen interest in mathematics, choose this course at university. A common misconception is that these types of courses (including science and arts) lead to no definite career paths. This is untrue. For mathematics, there are jobs in finance that pay very well, as mathematics graduates can often become actuaries or financial engineers. The thing is, becoming whatever you want does not require any specific degree (e.g. if you want to be an actuary, you don't actually need an actuary degree). There are professional bodies (e.g. CA, CPA for accountants, AIAA for actuaries, College of Law for lawyers etc) that set exams and their own criteria. Basically if you have the skills to pass their exams and meet their criteria, you can have that career.

Many mathematics graduates also go on to work in engineering, computer science, banking, insurance and other quantitative-analyst type positions. Only a small portion of maths graduates end up being in academia (the field of scholarly pursuits) as lecturers and researchers, as most people tend to think.

The UAI for maths degrees is generally low, as the demand is not too high for these courses. However don't be fooled, as there is absolutely no correlation between entrance UAI and course difficulty. As many people will tell you, maths degrees (along with engineering and science) are very difficult and challenging, but also very rewarding to those keenly interested.

USYD offers a BScience (Adv Math) degree which is highly regarded and is likely to contain the brightest university undergraduates in NSW. Its required UAI is around 98.

Science / Arts Science is a good degree if you're keenly interested in any science (chemistry, physics or biology). If you are more of a humanities person and enjoy subjects like English, ancient / modern history, languages, social sciences etc.
We recommend combining these subjects to more career-oriented degrees like commerce, engineering, law, medicine etc. These courses are great in that they add flavour to your other degree as well as giving you a wider experience gained from university education, which will help your career whatever that may be.

The required UAI for these courses are generally very accessible at even the more reputable universities. Generally speaking, USYD is slightly better than UNSW in terms of reputation for both Arts and Science degrees.

3 year single degree vs 5 year double degrees

Students often consider whether to do a 3 year SINGLE degree, or a 5 year DOUBLE degree during their time at university. In our experience, we recommend combining only if the second degree adds value to your career aspirations. For example, if you choose commerce and are thinking of combining this with Arts for example, you should ask yourself what you intend to get out of an Arts degree. For example, a good reason to combine is if you're learning languages and intend to work overseas in the future.

One thing students need to consider and realise is that combining a degree adds 2 whole years to your degree. Double degrees tend to be 5 years (some exceptions where they are 4 years, and some are longer). The extra HECS fees you incur over the extra 2 years should not be taken lightly. Think of university costing you an extra 60%! Additionally, you need to consider the opportunity cost (lost opportunity) of 2 years worth of working. If you had graduated 2 years earlier, you could have started your career 2 years younger, so we need to also consider whether the final decision of combing is worthwhile or not.

The effect of having 2 degrees on your hireability as a future jobseeker is overrated we think. University graduates with uncombined degrees (e.g. straight BCom) end up getting the same jobs as those who have combined (e.g. BCom / Science).

Therefore we recommend the general rule of combining only if necessary. Ask people who have gone through university and done the degree(s) you're thinking of doing. Ask them about whether there's any tangible benefit from combining degrees, in terms of career prospect, starting position, starting salary etc and make your decision based on the advice you get.

Honours degree If you're still enthusiastic over your university degree, even after 3-5 years, you can elect to do an extra year where you will (usually) conduct research into a specific area of your field, and at the end of the year, submit a long thesis with your findings. Honours degrees are awarded as modified degrees of the normal degree. For example if you did law and honours, it would be LLB(Hons).

An honours degree is looked upon highly favourably by employers as it indicates that the graduate has a deeper and more specialised knowledge of his field. Generally speaking, an honours degree is looked upon better than a combined degree. The view is that anyone can do a combined degree (just get the UAI you need) but not everyone is bright enough to do an honours degree. Therefore this is another reason why we recommend you to choose a course you will genuinely enjoy - because you will be good at it.

What if I don't get the UAI I need?

Fear not. Transferring within university is relatively easy. Transferring between universities or within the same university will involve calculation of a rank-based mark similar to a UAI. 25% of this score will be based on your latest UAI score, and 75% will be based on your university WAM (Weighted Average Mark) which is basically how well you've done at university so far.

Therefore, if you don't get the UAI you need for the course you desire, we strongly recommend that you choose a course that you're good at. If you choose something you are not good at, you won't be able to score a sufficiently high WAM to transfer into the course you want.

Typically for most popular courses at reputable universities, you will need a Distinction average (WAM > 75) after your first year to be able to successfully transfer into your desired course for second year onwards. We also highly recommend you do a course which is closely related to the degree you want to get into.

For example, a highly popular use of this technique to get into law at USYD or UNSW (because not everybody can get 99+ UAI) is to first enrol into commerce at these universities. Once you are in commerce, for your first year, while everyone else is busy partying, study hard and score a Distinction average. After your first year (2 semesters), this WAM combined with a UAI which is high enough to get you into commerce should be sufficient to be able to transfer into law successfully.

How hard is a Distinction average? Surprisingly less hard than people make it out to be. Remember, university is not like the HSC where you are forced to do English and 3-4 other subjects which are totally different. At university, assuming you follow our advice and choose something you'd be good at, all you need to worry about are 4 subjects per semester, each subject being related to the general field that you're interested in. There's no compulsory subjects, and no need to do subjects that have almost nothing to do with each other (e.g. History and Physics), all you need to do is focus on subjects which you happen to be good at. In fact, a High Distinction average (WAM > 85) is well within reach for some students, as long as they study consistently, pay attention in class and seek help when needed.

Getting really cheap college textbooks can be a daunting task. Until recently with the invention of the Internet it was almost impossible. Now all across the Internet you will find promises of really cheap college textbooks.

The problem with all these promises is that you either have to trade with somebody or sign up to sell your books and get credit for your new ones. To me that sounds fishy. Let me explain.

Lets say you are looking for really cheap college textbooks and you join one of the trading networks. You find somebody that wants to trade with you which is great. The only problem is that they don't really have the book you want. You send them your book and you don't get a book in return.

It has happened to me and I'm sure it will happen again to others. Finding really cheap college textbooks leads you to buy from the networks that promise 95% off all their books, which never really happens. If they gave you 95% off they wouldn't be able to stay in business. But at least you know you will get the book you ordered. But you still spent more than you wanted to.

You could also go to the college book store to get cheap college textbooks, which aren't very cheap.

Some people have even gone to the campus library and checked out the books they need for the semester, which is very smart because you get them for free. But you might only have so many weeks or days to keep that book. This isn't going to help you get through your classes.

Lastly to get cheap college textbooks you must search the net and use those shopping sites that find the cheapest prices for you.

While high schools typically adhere to uniform attendance policies, you will find that each college professor may have a different policy regarding attendance. Good class attendance in college is important because you have to comply with policies, but its advantages are far greater. Attending each class meeting will help you stay abreast of important dates and test material that are critical to academic success. While high school made it easy to make up a missed test after an absence, the same is not true in college. College professors expect you to take deadlines seriously and respect the guidelines set forth by the course. Additionally, you are responsible for taking detailed notes as the professor lectures and keeping up with required reading and assignments outside of class. Test material is often taken from a combination of textbook material, lecture material and skills acquired through projects and assignments.

Often, high school grades are calculated based on a combination of tests, projects, homework and other assignments. A high school student performing poorly on tests may manage to pass a class by completing all other assignments. Although you may receive credit for assignments in college, tests usually account for a majority of the weight of your grade. Professors expect you to fully grasp the concepts taught by the course, and demonstrate your understanding through performance on tests. Some class grades are calculated strictly from tests, and some even rely solely on a midterm and a final. If you have historically scraped by with lackadaisical study habits, now is the time to change them. College tests usually cover a lot of material, and procrastinating until the night before to study will only set you up for a rude awakening.

Succeeding in college takes dedication, organization and perseverance. You must maintain focus on short term goals such as preparing for next week's test, while steadily working toward longer term goals such as fulfilling the requirements of your degree and building a career in your field.
